Wallet CalendarThe Fertility Awareness Method (FAM) is a natural family planning described in the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility: The Definitive Guide to Natural Birth Control, Pregnancy Achievement, and Reproductive Health by Toni Weschler. FAM involves charting basal body temperatures and cervical fluids. FAM can also include charting information about the form and position of the cervix. For a free printable FAM chart, download the Fertility Awareness Method Chart.

FAM works to prevent pregnancy by helping a woman avoid unprotected sexual intercourse on her most fertile days. Many women also use FAM to help time intercourse for conception while trying to conceive.

Depending on how closely a woman adheres to the Fertility Awareness Method, her changes of becoming pregnant over the course of a year are between 2% and 20%. In comparison, a woman who uses no method of birth control has a 60% to 80% chance of conceiving in a year. A woman who uses other forms of birth control such as condoms or a diaphragm in addition to FAM lowers her risk of pregnancy even more.

The greatest benefit of the Fertility Awareness Method is that the method is hormone-free. The method also poses no health risks to the woman. Furthermore, FAM is compatible with most religious beliefs including beliefs that forbid the use of artificial contraceptives such as the pill or condoms. Finally, FAM allows a woman to better understand her menstrual cycle and her body.
